Hardwood Floors

Solid wood floors are as useful and economical as they are beautiful and comfortable. In comparison with carpets and other man made floor coverings, solid wood flooring will hold up to years of heavy use. Wood floorings are also easily maintained and can be eco-friendly as well.

Installed Hardwood Floor

When it comes to hardwood flooring, there are multiple options available, including type of wood, size of planks, and finishing products.

The different choices of quality wood that are available also make it an unbeatable option.

When it comes to doing a project yourself, a successful hardwood floor installation is certainly one of the most rewarding. New hardwood flooring can convert a room with warmth, beauty, and elegance.

The difficulty of the task depends on the type of flooring and floor space requirements where it will be installed. You can choose from solid wood strips and planks, wood parquet, prefinished, and faux wood floors. Each has its own benefits and disadvantages.

A hardwood floor can be ruined if it is installed incorrectly. Hardwood floors must be laid on clean, flat, dry surfaces. Anything else is an invitation to disaster. Water and hardwood do not mix. Most hardwood floors may become damaged if laid in basements or other damp areas, including kitchens and bathrooms, where moisture and spills are common.

Wood flooring endures more abuse from spills, to walking, scratching, stomping, dirt, and mud being tracked in. So “finishing” hardwood floors is important to keep them looking beautiful.

Surface Finishes for Hardwood Floors

Surface finishes are blends of synthetic resins. There are several types of surface finishes available, including water-based, oil-based, and acid-cured. These options are very popular because they are durable, water-resistant, and require minimal maintenance. Then there is the Penetrating Seal Finish which is a wax finish. This product soaks into the pores of the wood and hardens it to form a protective seal. Wax finishes are durable, but will show spots from water and other contaminates.

After years of wear the floor can usually be restored without sanding. It can generally be cleaned by applying another coat of sealer or a special reconditioning product. Worn areas can usually be refinished without showing lap marks when new finish is applied over the old.

Acrylic Finishes for Hardwood Floors

Acrylic impregnated finishes are injected into the wood to create a super hard, extremely sturdy floor. Acrylic finishes, however, are rarely used in residential homes. They most often are used in very high traffic areas in businesses or commercial settings such as malls and restaurants.
