This can mean using two, maybe three, tile colors that complement each other and the room well. If you have a lot of stainless steel appliances in your kitchen, a silver or metallic color tile can be a nice accent. Whites and bland colors, such as browns, beiges, and grays, are classic and go with many types of wood, tile, and countertops.

Calculate the amount and cost that is needed for the project. Measure the length and width of the area that will be tiled with a tape measure to determine how much tile is needed for purchase. Always buy extra tiles just in case replacement is needed in the future.

Preparing the Surface to be Tiled

Prepare the walls in advance by making sure they are in good shape and have been properly cleaned before application of the tile is started. Tile tape or adhesive can stick to a wide variety of surfaces, as long as they are clean, dry, and of sound structure. If there is any water or moist areas on the walls, then waiting for the wall to dry before tiling is needed. A dehumidifier can be used for faster drying. Stripping off any existing flexible coverings, such as wallpaper, or scraping away loose paint with a paint scraper may also be needed. Sanding and patching any holes is another important step.

Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

When tiling or doing any project that involves using a saw to make cuts, safety needs to be exercised by wearing worker’s goggles. If working around electrical outlets, make sure the power to the room has been turned off and all outlet covers have been removed before beginning.
